Phentermine, also known as Phentermine P or phentermine, is a serious stimulant which is used to promote weight loss in significantly obese people who are at risk of developing other health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Because it affects the central nervous system, it can have serious health consequences for anyone who is taking it.
The drug is used in conjunction with diet and an aggressive exercise program to address the issue of obesity in people who have tried other diet methods which have failed. It may also be used to treat other conditions but should never be used without the supervision of a physician.
People who are using Phentermine should never take it if they have also taken MAO inhibitor drugs like furazolidone within the past fourteen days. Doing so can cause a serious drug interaction which could lead to serious side effects. Taking Phentermine while also taking Phen-Fen (also known as Fastin can sometimes cause a rare but fatal lung disorder known as pulmonary hypertension.
Another side effect of Phentermine is a decrease in reaction time and thinking impairment. For these reasons people who are using this medication should be extremely careful if they are driving or working with machinery or performing any activities which require them to be alert. Ingesting alcohol will heighten these impairments and is strongly discouraged.
There is some concern that Phentermine may become habit forming. Thus, physicians are strongly encouraged to screen patients for histories of drug abuse or drug addiction before prescribing this medication. In addition, patients should be warned about the potential withdrawal symptoms they may experience if they stop using this drug all suddenly.
People who have coronary heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, glaucoma or an overactive thyroid should not take Phentermine. As well, anyone who is allergic to stimulants or amphetamines or any type of cold medicine should not take Phentermine.
The FDA has not established whether or not using Phentermine during pregnancy can cause harm to a fetus. Anyone who is planning to become pregnant or becomes pregnant while using this drug should advise their physician right away. Phentermine has been shown to pass through breast milk and women who are breast feeding are advised not to take it. This medication should not be used by anyone younger than 16 years of age.
The active ingredient in Phentermine is something known as phentermine which works to decrease appetite in the person who is taking it. Many people can take this drug without experiencing any side effects but nearly everyone who takes too much of the drug will experience some side effects.
In clinical studies the side effects experienced most commonly included feelings of euphoria or extreme happiness, feelings of dysphoria or extreme unpleasantness, extreme dry mouth, restlessness and periods of hyperactivity, insomnia, constipation and/or diarrhea. Other side effects that were noted were an unpleasant taste in the mouth, dizziness and sexual problems.
Anyone who is experiencing an allergic reaction to Phentermine may have an unexplained rash that may or may not be accompanied by itching. They may also experience hives or unexplained swelling. Some people may begin to experience wheezing or difficulty breathing.
Phentermine is available in pill form and only by prescription.
